Omega 3 and ANAsFrom: Anna (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 2 Mar 1998 20:09:48 -0600 (CST)
I was just reading some literature about Omega 3 fish oils and was wondering if there has been any research about its beneficial affects during pregnancy on antinuclear antibodies. I have rheumatoid arthritis and I have been taking omega 3 fish oil supplements under doctor's supervision with spectacular results (my sed rate has dropped from 47 to 16 in 5 months) and I hardly have any pain. Since I have been taking supplements, however, I have had a lot of very big bruises and I have since found out that this is because the EPA component of the fish oil has an anti-clotting effect (somehow it affects prostaglandin production). As aspirin and heparin are used for pregnancy loss with the presence of ANAs, I was wondering whether Omega 3 might do the same thing and whether anyone is researching this? PS Does the antinuclear antibody level fluctuate with the activity of disease? I am contemplating pregnancy and am wondering whether now might be a good time. Thanks for any info.
