They arise when glands get covered by the surrounding tissue. The glands produce mucous, which enlarges to form a cyst that ranges from 1cm to 3cm (they are usually no larger than the last joint of the thumb. Very rarely they can grow large enough to protrude form the vagina. These are benign and a normal part of cervical physiology. They do not require treatment (they go away on their own). If your doctor is unsure of the diagnosis, or if you are worried, the cyst can easily be popped using a small needle. This is painless. Mucous will come out, and the cyst will shrink. It is unlikely but possible that this represents a cervical pre-cancer or cancer. It could also be a genital wart. Again, however, the overwhelming chance is that this is a nabothian cyst.
