If you are breastfeeding exclusively (baby gets *nothing* but breastmilk directly from you), breastfeeding on demand every 2-3 hours or more often, the baby is not ever going for more than 6 (I think) hours at night without being fed, and your periods have not returned, then you are probably not ovulating, and for the first 6 months, you are about 98% protected from pregnancy. I'll dig up references on this if you like.

Dr. Marchbein: My understanding is that they are not contraindicated during breastfeeding, although there *might* be a increased risk of perforation. My PDR says, under precautions for the Paragard T380A: "...Data also suggests that there may be an increased risk of perforation and expulsion if the woman is lactating. Other recent studies report no increased risk of perforation or expulsion on lactation women."

Which states: "Breast-feeding is not associated with an increase in IUD expulsion or uterine perforation, and it is associated with fewer removals for bleeding or pain. "

And:

Farr G; Rivera R: Interactions between intrauterine contraceptive device use and breast-feeding status at time of intrauterine contraceptive device insertion: analysis of TCu-380A acceptors in developing countries. Am J Obstet Gynecol 1992 Jul;167(1):144-151

which states: "Breast-feeding among intrauterine contraceptive device users was associated with fewer insertion-related complaints and lower removal rates for bleeding and pain. No uterine perforations were reported throughout the study. "
