If you evaluate your cervical mucous daily this will provide a good clue. It will get more like egg white as you approach ovulation, and ovulate. Other times it will be more like Elmer's glue. I think most NFP books will have info useful for nursing mothers. I know there is a chapter in Margaret Nofzinger's book called "The mucous only method for breastfeeding mothers"

this varies a lot with the individual. In my practice I have seen breastfeeding moms begin to menstruate at 6 weeks, and others (who were still nursing a lot) go over 3 years!

Most texts, like Contraceptive Technology, do not list breastfeeding as a contraindication. I placed 8 IUDs in BF mothers last year with no problems.
