Clomiphene citrate (Clomid) is an anti-estrogen which, when it attaches to the estrogen receptors of the brain, makes the brain think there is not enough estrogen around, so the brain tells the ovary to step up production. This allows for ovulation. The anti-estrogen part of the activity can also thicken cervical mucus.

The twinning rate with Clomid is approximately 6% (1.2% in the general population without medication).

The medication is used for such a short period that side effects are uncommon.
