Pill poop-out?

I have been on the pill for over 10 years (the same one for the last 6 years--except for the year I was pregnant). I have always been very pleased with the way the pill regulates my cycle, minimizes cramps and acne, and controls my PMS. But the last couple of months things have changed. I've started getting acne mid-cycle, including horrible cysts on my back like I had when I was pregnant; but it clears up 4-5 days before my period. I've also had really bad cramps for 1-2 days before my period, but extremely light periods (lighter than they have normally been on the pill-just brownish staining). And I can't predict when it will start. I finish my pills on Saturday, but sometimes my period starts on Monday, other times it doesn't start til Wednesday. Is this irregularity normal when you're on the pill? In addition, I have noticed that I feel very edgy, sensitive, and irritable for 1-2weeks before my period. If I'm not careful, I'm going to lose my job.

I feel like I reverting back to my "not on the pill" patterns, except for the lighter bleeding. When I'm not on the pill, I have very heavy bleeding for 5-7 days, debilitating cramps, vomiting, diarrhea, and pms from you-know-where. ANd I never knew when it would start. These problems are part of why I choose the pill, and have even stayed on it at times in my life that I wasn't sexually active. Things haven't gotten that bad, but I don't want to continue to get worse.

Can your body "get used" to a pill so that it no longer regulates things as well? Can that impact its contraceptive effectiveness? What are some possible causes for this change in my cycles? Is there anything to be concerned about? Any suggestions for getting things back to "normal" (pill normal, that is)? I'm only 27, so I've got lots of years of this ahead of me.

Thanks.
