Most gynecologists recommend removing the cervix to avoid potential future cervical cancer. Some favor leaving the cervix to allow you to resume intercourse sooner and to potentially provide support to the vagina.

IF you have NEVER had an abnormal pap smear, and IF you are not at high risk for an abnormal pap smear (very few sexual partners, didn't start having sex when you were a teenager, no history of STDs), then you can discuss leaving the cervix behind. However, if you should develop cervical cancer in the future, it can be more difficult to treat if the rest of the uterus has also been removed. You need to discuss the risks and the benefits with your doctor.
