bacterial vaginosis and lactobacillusFrom: Liz (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 31 Jan 1998 11:32:00 -0600 (CST)
I was diagnosed with a yeast infection and bacterial baginosis and was treated with two different types of medications (both vaginal). I get this infection once a year generally. I went back to the doctor the first time, and it had not gone away so he prescribed two different medications (both oral). After 8 days, I still didn't feel back to normal, so went back...he said the bacteria and yeast were gone, but now the good bacteria (lactobacillus) was not present. My questions are: 1) Why don't I feel back to normal (somewhat sore) and still have some discharge if the bacteria are gone? He recommended I douche with water and vinegar to increase acidity, but I have been reading everywhere that one shouldn't douche with any type of infection. And if so, how often should I douche, or what other things can I do to increase lactobacillus bacteria? 2) He assured me that PID wasn't a possibility (I had a vaginal culture that came back negative for certain types of infections) but how is one absolutely sure...I have read that it is difficult to test...should he do more tests for this since I still feel like I have the infection?
