Lori,

I use this in my practice so, yes, it is available in the US.

It does not detect cancer of the cervix. It detects the presence or absence of a variety of subtypes of the virus H(uman) P(apilloma) V(irus).

The test comes out :

1)Negative for HPV

2)Positive for low risk HPV (mainly subtypes 6 & 11 but others are included) This means tht the presence of this virus is more associated with wart formation and less with cancers although there is some crossover.

3)Positive for high risk HPV (mainly subtypes 16 &18 but others are included). This means tht the presence of this virus is more associated with potentially cancerous possibilities and may need to be treated more aggressively even at its earlier stages.
