Risk of cysts and PCOS due to Clomid useFrom: Carrie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 30 Jan 1998 11:48:11 -0600 (CST)
My understanding is that PCOS is one of the causes for irregular ovulatory cycles. PCOS occurs when the ovum and the follicle which contains it does not fully mature; the follicle therefore does not release the ovum and disentegrate. Over time these follicles build up on the ovaries forming little bumps, hence the name 'polycystic ovarian syndrome'. (This is my non-technical version of PCOS -- is it right?) Clomid is a fertility drug that helps the ovum and follicle reach full maturation. However, I have also read somewhere that it may cause an increase in the size of existing cysts. My question: Does this side effect of Clomid pertain to the cysts or bumps formed as a result of PCOS, or does it cause an increase in the size of ovarian cysts formed as a result of things other than PCOS. As a related question: are all cysts the same regardless of what caused their formation in the first place (be it as a result of PCOS or something else)?
