One important factor to remember is that 40 weeks is not a magic number. As I heard recently, it's NOT like the due date for your electric bill, that is, if not paid on time, it's late. At about 41 weeks or so, you should begin to have some testing, usually a nonstress test and measurement of amniotic fluid. At this point there is no reason for induction, unless the baby shows some signs of not being happy.
