Hemorrhagic ovarian cystFrom: Andrea (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 20 Jan 1998 07:47:57 -0600 (CST)
I am 29 years old, married, never pregnant. In April of 1997 I experienced a sharp pain to my lower left side. (At this time I was on ortho-cyclen and had been for approximately 4 years.) Since then I am experiencing a constant pressure in the same area. In May of 1997 and had a pelvic ultrasound conducted. A small (2-3 cm) cyst was discovered on my left ovary. The doctor said they would monitor it and see if it would go away on its own and to have another ultrasound done in 10 weeks. Well, I ignored the pressure and figured I had overreaacted and did not schedule another ultrasound until this week. (about 10 months later). During this time (about 3 months ago) I also stopped taking the ortho-cyclen. My sister recently underwent laparascopy to remove an ovarian cyst, my cousin had one removed last year (both are 32 yrs old), and my mother had one removed 25 yrs ago after having 5 children. In January 1998, I had another pelvic ultrasound and the left ovary is about 3 times the size of the right ovary. The lab tech mentioned that the cyst appears to be inside the ovary and not "attached" to it. He mentioned to call my doctor to see what course of action would be taken. The lab tech mentioned it appeared to be the common "herorrhagic cyst". Although I see my doctor in a couple of weeks, I'd like to know what others in this profession think. Is further observation recommended or should I have it removed. I'd like to take care of this and the pain isn't that bad, if it will go away by itself I'd be more than happy to wait; however, I don't want to wait so that laparscopy is no longer a viable alternative. Thanks in advance for your help
