heavy periods and cramping

I am 41, have had my tubes tied and over the past six months I have had 10-12 day periods with heavy flow and cramping. My doctor did a pap last week and I am awaiting the results. He now wants to do an endometrial biopsy. Will the pap show enough so that I don't have to go under the knife? Can an exam tell if there are fibroids so that if this is the case those can be treated with out a biopsy? I have had abortions but no children. Please reply, this is really getting old and more painful with each passing month.
