Suprise episiotomyFrom: anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 7 Jan 1998 19:19:28 -0600 (CST)
I gave birth to a beautiful baby boy 8 months ago. He was 9 lbs 2oz. I was induced with gel, and then by having my water broken (?membranes stripped). My baby was born about less than 2 hours later. I was pushing well, for less than an hour, when the ob suddenly cut, without saying anything! There was no fetal distress. I had written in my birth plan that I prefered to tear, but understood an episiotomy may be necessary in an emergency. When we discussed the birth plan, he said they usually weren't necessary. The cut (which I thought you shouldn't feel if the head was crowning) and stitching after were definately the most painful part of the labor. I ripped to 4th degree, and the post-partum period was extremely uncomfortable. I was very upset, didn't sleep much, and my milk didn't come in until the 5th day. By this time, my son was so dehydrated, and nobody noticed earlier, that he had to be in NICU for several days. I realize this may have happened anyway, but I can't help but think it contributed. The ob did the cutting right after a nurse told him that a patient just came in at 24 weeks, 10cm. I wonder if he was in a hurry togo to this patient. But then it took him over an hour to stitch. Now intercourse is still very painful if any pressure is put on the scar. I am having a very hard time to get over this ordeal mentally. I feel that my trust in the doctor was violated because he didn't say anything. I wrote him a letter asking him to please explain why the episiotomy was necessary, but no reply. I am scared of another epis. during the next delivery because of the scar tissue. Any suggestions to help heal both the physical and mental problems would be greatly appreciated.
