Re: Question...From: Anne (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 5 Jan 1998 11:11:13 -0600 (CST)
Dear Megan, As Dr. Harvey would likely say...TTSTD- Time To See The Doctor!. With no history given, sex activity, first menses, other medical problems etc., and difficulty in diagnosing over the internet it may be difficult for the Drs. to help you. I had my first visit when I was 18 and it was not too bad. Kinda weird but bearable. My (nonmedical) advice would be to ask your close friends and family who they go to. If you don't want to do that a local hospital may have good referrals for you. MAKE SURE you tell people you are apprehensive about going. Also don't just limit yourslf to Female doctors, there are so many male Obgyns out there that get overlooked by first time prospective patients because of gender. My Dr. is a man and I wouldn't have it any other way! Another thing is take a friend with you. It makes things easier. Make a list of your problems and make sure the nurse knows that this is not just a routine check up, although they will probably do standard tests like PAP smear and breast check up. Remember it is important to make sure you are okay for now and the future. Catch problems early and they help prevent more later which may be EXPENSIVE like infertility, and other things. Well I hope I helped. ( Hope I didn't step on any toes Dr. Marchbein :) ) Good Luck Anne N.
