Re: bartholin abscess treatments- marsupialization vs. windowFrom: D. Ashley Hill, M.D. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sun, 4 Jan 1998 17:08:44 -0600 (CST)
Harvey- The "window procedure" was reported by Cho and colleagues in the green journal a few years back. It's a modification of the marsupialization procedure where a larger, oval incision is made then sutured essentially the same as the marsupialization. Cho did about 30 cases (I think) with no failures, and theorized that the slightly larger incision prevented recurrence. There's not much difference between both procedures, in my opinion, and I simply do a "large" marsupialization procedure for Bartholin cysts that fail 1 attempt at a Word catheter or are recurrent. By the way, in case you think I'm a smart guy for knowing this, think again. I recently wrote a paper on office-based treatment of Bartholin cysts for American Family Physician (in press), and did an extensive literature review for the paper! Ashley
