Congtarulations on the good attitude about the surgery -- if you go into it wiht the thought that you are going to do well, you *will* have a better recovery; the mind is a very powerful thing. Here's my advice re:questions to ask during the pre-op: -- what are my alternatives to a hysterectomy? Why are you recommending a hysterectomy over these other treatments? --what are the risks of the surgery? (the answer should include anesthesia, bleeding, infection, damage to the other "stuff" around the uterus, among others and should be very extenively discussed) -- what are the odds you'll be able to do the surgery vaginally? (this depends on lots of factors, such as the size of the uterus, the roominess of your vagina and the experience of the surgeon. I always tell my patients that when I do laparoscopic or vaginal surgery there is a chance I may have to open her up for technical reasons or complications) --how long will I be in the hospital? What can I expect when I wake up? What will I get for pain? -- what about after the surgery? Whan can I go back to work?have sex? drive a car? --will you talk to my family after the surgery and tell them what went on? -- have you done a lot of surgeries like mine?
Best wishes for a successful surgery and a speedy recovery.
