It's very helpful to take the medicine before you get your period. I know this can be difficult if you're not predictable but it makes a lot of difference if the medicine is already in your system when your period begins. Also, I've found Aleve to be better than Motrin. It's also long-acting which I find beneficial. Be sure to take it with food.

I have chronic back pain and fibromyalgia and have pain medicine on hand. I've found Vicodin (it's a narcotic-hydrocodone and tylenol) to be helpful.

Also, I was recently started on Flexeril, which is a muscle relaxant, for my fibromyalgia. I only take 1/2 a pill every night and I think I've noticed a difference in my cramps since I've started taking it. It makes sense to me that the muscle relaxant is helping the cramps.

I, too, worry about taking too much Aleve when I have my period. Especially if I'm late and keep taking it as a precaution. Does anyone know if you can develop stomach problems from too much ALeve, ibu, etc. even if you always take it with food, or doesn't that matter for long-term stomach problems.
