Re: pain in ovaries...From: Jean (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 31 Dec 1997 16:22:59 -0600 (CST)
a >-- >Can you explain to me what exactly is a laporoscopy? > Hi Missy: Maybe one of the docs will offer a more proper explanation re laparoscopy, but in the meantime I'll give it a shot - under general anesthesia (sp?), a very small incision is made in the abdomen near the "belly button". A probe or scope is inserted and with this instrument, the physician can see inside the abdomen and look at the organs, etc. This is how a diagnosis of endometriosis is done, for one. It shows adhesions, etc, etc. and the doc can see the health of your "innerds"..... A kind of gas (don't know which) is put into the abdominal cavity in order to open up the space thereby making it easier to look around. As I say, it is a diagnostic tool, and as well I believe they can do some surgeries at the same time. When I had my laparoscopy, I went in at 12:00 and was out by around 4:00. There was very little discomfort for me, though I did experience some soreness in my shoulders - I later found out that this was due to the "gas" they use. Anyway, this is all from a non-medical person, but I hope it helps til someone more "edumacated" passes on info! Regards, Jean
