Thank you, Dr. MarchbeinFrom: Sarah (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 31 Dec 1997 10:14:55 -0700 (MST)
Dr. Marchbein, Thank you for letting me know that what I have been reading about postmenopausal ovaries providing some protection against heart disease is inaccurate. I was beginning to worry that having had a prophylactic oophorectomy might not have been such a good idea for me since my dad had his first heart attack at age 51. I excercise regularly, don't smoke, I'm not overweight, and I take my premarin, so if postmenopausal ovaries don't provide any protection against heart disease, I guess I don't have to regret my prophylactic oophorectomy on that score. One of the gynocologists I went to see to help me with the loss of libido and diminished sense of well-being that I have been experiencing since my ovaries were removed suggested that it might help if I went to see a Psychoanalyst. That sounded like a pretty good idea to me, so I made an appointment to see a Psychoanalyst. During my first appointment with her, I started telling her about some of the adverse side effects I had been experienceing since my ovaries were removed. I was very surprised when suddenly she began to cry. Turns out, she had had a prophylactic oophorectomy a few years ago, and she said many of the side effects I have experienced, she has experienced as well. Still, it helps to talk to another woman who knows what I am going through, and we have started a hysterectomy/surgical menopause support group in our community. I am glad that you intend to discuss both the pros and the cons of a prophylactic oophorectomy with your wife, Dr. Marchbein, if and when she should require a hysterectomy. Consent and informed consent are two very different things. Again, thank you. And thanks to all of the gynocologists on this list who give so generously of their time.
