Ovarian CystsFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netTue, 23 Dec 1997 15:10:31 -0600
I have had 2 ultrasounds that reveal many cysts of varying sizes in my right and left ovaries, enlarging the size of the ovary itself. The one on the right has very large cysts with calcifications. One doctor has said that this is normal for a woman my age which is 52. I am still menstruating regularly and ovulating. I am 50 lbs overweight which I am told has resulted in my storing estrogen in the excess fatty tissue which is delaying my menopause. These explanations baffle me. Is it truly normal for a woman my age to have this condition? I don't feel any pain during the month except for severe cramps during ovulation and my period. Otherwise, I have no other symptoms that I'm aware of with this condition. I have concerns as there is a history of cancer in my family. My sister had cervical cancer. My grandmother and my great aunt both died of cancer. My grandmother died of ovarian cancer and my great aunt died of uterine cancer. All the other female children in my family have had hysterectomies in their 40s, so no one has really gone through normal menopause. They tell me I will be the first. The hysterectomies, I'm told were not due to cancerous or pre-cancerous conditions. It seems that all of these women have had menstrual problems that their doctors treated by removing their uterus. The general family philosophy, which I do not share, is that I would be better off asking my doctor for a hysterectomy now. I do not want to get rid of any of my body parts unecessarily. Further, so far I have not been told by any doctor that I have anything to be concerned about at this time. Should I worry?
