I had this occur with the baby I lost in September at sixteen weeks. I did have a placental separation. It was there before the clot was diagnosed. I had had light bleeding for 2-3 weeks before a 3rd scan showed the clot and separation.

I actually have a couple questions. First of all, how common does this occur in a subsequent pregnancy? BTW, my first pregnancy was normal except I developed mild pre-eclampsia near term. No major complications there. The loss was my second pregnancy. Also, I was told that what I had was technically an abruption but that it was not called that so early on. The last scan showed several areas of hemorrhage. I never experienced any real pain though. Would this cause me to be high risk in the next pregnancy? I wasn't considered high risk from the pre-eclampsia but I was being watched for any problems.

My last question is to clarify the difference between a subchorionic clot and a retroplacental clot. Is one worse than the other or do they both hold similar prognosis. From the time of my initial bleeding, I was told that there was a risk of miscarriage. I wasn't told I was high risk until I had heavy bleeding though.

Sorry if this is all confusing. This is the first mention I have seen of retroplacental clots so I am keen to find out a little more. I am guessing they are not that common as none of the popular literature for pregnant women seems to have information about it. (not in any I have seen, that is.)

If anyone has any information, I would appreciate any clarifications.

Thanks,

Lori
