Any information on raloxifene?From: Kathleen (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 12 Dec 1997 14:07:56 -0600 (CST)
I don't know if anyone will pick up this message and respond b/c I sense a *very* big medical bias toward HRT for all postmenopausal women, for life, on this forum. However, I would like to know about the newest drug (a SERM) called raloxifene. I have moderate osteoporosis at age 50, but became (naturally) menopausal at age 38 (so said my tests at the time). I don't think--strictly speaking-- that I had premature ovarian failure b/c according to my ob/gyn at the time, I had many, many eggs present. I did get hot flashes at the time, but they were relatively minor. I "gutted" it out, since, at that time, my ob/gyn made me aware that I would need to be on HRT for a long time and, in 1985, there was very little on the long-term effects of HRT, so I declined it. For some strange reason, I *blamed* myself for bringing on my own menopause %@&*! I am now taking Miacalcin nasal spray plus 1600 mg of calcium, 400 iu of vit E, a multivitamin, got my surgeon to reduce my Synthroid from .150 to .100, and walk outside or walk on my treadmill 4-5 times per week. If I can get my bone density increased using the Miacalcin, I wonder if I can consider raloxifene after 1-2 years. Thank you.
