Teratology is the study of abnormalities of development. teratogenicity is the risk or chance of an abnormal development of a fetus or organ system. The literature indicates that the teratogenicity of tegretol is less than 10% and dilatin (another similar use drug) is 10%. The risk to all pregnancies for major birth defects (without relation to genetic exposure) is 3%. The only other article I could find stated the risk of neural tube defects was less than 1%. I hope this helps. The articles do recommend a minimum of medication, preferably one medication rather than multiples, and that valproic acid (another similar-use medication) may carry a "threefold increase in the risk of neural tube defects as well as an increased risk of other malformations".
