Amniotic Banding SyndromeFrom: Carolyn (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 8 Dec 1997 08:03:06 -0600 (CST)
OK, I have a question about ABS. My niece was born with it about 18 months ago. I've tried doing a search on the net and only came up with some very graphic pictures of what "could" happen. So, I'm curious as to what causes ABS. My BIL and SIL were told that there is something in the baby's genetic makeup that causes ABS and it isn't anything that the mother did or didn't do. I also heard that ABS could be caused by a small tear in the amniotic sac that repairs itself with these bands. Madeline was born missing 3 fingers (almost down to the palm), and portions of 3 others (mostly above the first knuckle). Two of her toes were webbed, a "wart" was produced on her arm from a band wrapping around skin on her arm and they believe that there was a band around one ankle (as there is scar tissue that can be readily felt). Based on the pics, Madeline was VERY lucky. Now my SIL was told that they can diagnose ABS with a level 2 US, but I was wondering if ABS can be treated in-vitro? Can the bands be cut before they do any damage? They are talking about a second child but are nervous about ABS being a factor again. Any insight? Thanks in advance. Carolyn
