How can I tell?

After my son was born, I was diagnosed w/fibrocystic breast disease. How can I tell the difference between a lump from the fibrocystic disease, and a lump that should be looked at? They normally act up when I'm about to get my period, but I haven't had one since Sept. I found a lump that is sore, but doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Most of the lumps I get come and go. However, I've had lumps before and NP said just to monitor them. How long do I monitor them? Cancer is rampant on my mom's side, along w/fibrocystic disease. One aunt has already had a masectomy from breast cancer (one breast, then the other).

Thanks again, Laura
