IS AN ULTRASOUND EVER A STANDARD PROCEDURE?

I AM 32 WEEKS PG AND THOUGHT THAT IT WAS STANDARD PRACTICE TO HAVE AN ULTRASOUND SOMETIME BETWEEN NOW AND 40 WEEKS. MY OB AND HIS NURSE BOTH SAID THAT THIS IS ONLY IN HIGH RISK PG'S. I HAD ONE US AT 6 WEEKS TO R/O AN ECTOPIC PREG, ONE AT 9 WEEKS FOR THREATENED MISCARRIAGE, AND ONE AT 18 WEEKS TO CHECK THE FUNDAL HEIGHT. IS AN ULTRASOUND A STANDARD PROCEDURE TO DETERMINE THE LIE, THE SIZE OF THE FETUS AND RULE OUT ANY ABNORMALITIES?
