Re: after surgery painFrom: Judy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 17 Nov 1997 15:05:21 -0600 (CST)
To all the ladies with up coming surg. good luck. I am an OB/GYN nurse ( of the RN type) that is hosp. based in a teaching hosp in the S.E. That said maybe I can give you some insight on your care after your surg. After you get to your room and get setttled in you will either be sleepy, in pain, or both. Your nurse will do what ever in within her/his power and your doctor's orders to make you as painfree as possible. You may or may not get anything to eat or drink (this depends on your doctor's orders). Let me encourge you to talk to your doctor before surg about such things as pain med., diet, foley cath, etc. None of this has to be a surprise, if you will only ask. The next morning (and this is at my hosp and with the doctors I work with) the foley cath is usually removed. Ladies get showers and are encourged to sit in the chair. After a rest in bed, walking in the hall is encourged. I tell my ladies this is the ONLY way to get well and go home. Patients who walk do so MUCH better. Let pain, fewer complications, etc. For abd. surg home in 2 to 4 days after day of surg. For vaginal surg I have seen some go home as early as day after surgery. As I said before foley caths come out as early as the evenning of surg, more likely the morning after surgery (about 5 AM where I work). If you had bladder surg also, it will prob. be later. Sorry this is long, but maybe this will answer some of your questions. Again, good luck. The above is for education only and may not apply to all.
