The placenta (afterbirth) makes HCG, the "pregnancy hormone" that shows up on the pregnancy tests. It makes this throughout the pregnancy, although in most cases the level rises until 8-10 weeks to a level of about 100,000 IU/L, then falls slightly to reach about 10,000-20,000 IU/L throughout the rest of the pregnancy. After the baby is born it can take up to a month for the level to reach zero. Thus, as you can see, HCG is detectable in pregnant women during their entire pregnancy. Thanks for the question,
