Dong Quai and ginseng are both "tonic" herbs; in fact, dong quai is often called the "female ginseng". You don't need to take both.

Black cohash is a better herb in terms of providing relief from symptoms such as hot flashes. It has a higher phytoestrogen content by far. Remifemin is a readily available brand.

Vitamin E 400 -1200 IU daily also helps prevent hot flashes.

Calcium 1500mg daily, in combination with magnesium is essential for helping maintain bone mass. Weight bearing exercise for both upper and lower body are very important.

Soy (tofu, soy milk, soy flour, soy protein powder) and flaxseeds are also good sources of natural estrogens. Soy has the additional benefit of lowering cholesterol levels. 25gms of soy proten daily is the usual dose (that's about 1 block of tofu)

Susun Weed's book "Wise Women herbal, the Menopause Years" is a good resource.
