We're home!! (very long)From: Noelle (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 3 Nov 1997 13:16:05 -0600 (CST)
Hello everyone! Thank you all sooooooo much for all of your kind notes of cognraatulations on the birth of Max. We were all blown away by the love and warm wishes from all of our friends here at the Forum. Please forgive me for being so late in replying to you....things are quite hectic around here. Here's the long and short of it.....(okay - not so short - I'll understand if you skim!).... We went in on Tuesday (wow - almost a week!) and did a prostaglandin gel at 9:30am with basically no noticeable effects. When the midwife checked me at 12:30pm to do another gel, I had gone from 3 to 4 cm but there was certainly no labor happening. Then after the second gel, I had a bit of cramping for a couple of hours, but still no labor really. Then at about 3pm, Ted and I walked the halls and BLAMMO - labor began!! The contractions were all seriously intense and and in my back, just as I had hoped they wouldn't be ;) From that time on, there was little or no break until finally at around 6:20pm I was fully dilated and ready to push. I say "finally" since it felt like a lifetime!! The ironic thing was that I had said earlier that I oculd handle short and intense, but long and intense would be just to much -- I guess I was given just that! Anyway, I pushed for only 14 minutes (with no tearing - yippee!) and there he was -- Maximilian John Haland was born at 6:34pm at 9lbs 5oz and 21 3/4 inches long and apgars of 9 & 9! I can't even describe the relief I felt when I heard my midwife say that the cord wasn't around his neck and to go ahead and finish pushing him out! And the feeling of hearing him cry almost immediately was overwhelming. Ted "caught" him, too! He was totally alert rigth away - I couldn't believe how gorgeous he was. EVERYONE was crying!!!! Things since then have been of course WONDERFUL and also not so wonderful *all* the time. My placenta was retained so I had to go to OR under general anesthesia to have it removed :( Luckily, it was not an "emergency" situation and I was able to spend about 40 minutes or so after the birth with Max. Unfortunately, I lost quite a bit of blood during the "surgery" so getting back on my feet and back to normal will take quite a long time. (My hemoglobin was 7.5 when I left the hospital on Thursday which I guess isn't exactly ideal.) Settling in has been quite a challenge. Max has jaundice so we have him on constant billirubin phototherapy at home. It's one of these fiberoptic abdomen belts that thankfully still allow us to hold and nurse him, etc. So our mobility is constricted and I'm confined for most of the time upstairs - away from the computer :( Breastfeeding has also proven to be quite a challenge - especially since Max needs to eat about every 2 hours to get rid of the billirubin and he's sleepier than he would be otherwise, making things somewhat difficult sometimes. BUT.....he is doing really great and the jaundice is slowly going away. Today when our home nurse visited, he was back to his BIRTH WEIGHT!!! He gained 5 ounces in 24 hours!! I guess it's all those "power lunches" :) So even through mine and Ted's freakish nervousness about the jaundice, utter lack of sleep, and breast engorgement (anyone got any tips?), we all are QUITE HAPPY and DELIRIOUS to have such a wonderul gift in our lives and on the outside with us! He reminds us so much of his big brother Ethan in many ways. The whole experience brought back a lot of memories of Ethan's birth last year (11 months ago yesterday) and Max really does look like Ethan in some ways (same valentine lips!)......we miss Ethan so much, but Max has brought us all so much happiness that I can't even describe. We're so grateful. I will probably be out of the online loop for a little while, but we are trying to get some photos developed and scanned really soon to show all of you. Max is in fact the most beautiful baby ever made - of course! :) Thank you all again for all of your love and support throughout this scary pregnancy and of course now that Max is finally here in our arms. You all have really been so wonderful. Love, Noelle
