It is certainly possible that you are peri- or post-menopausal. Premature ovarian failure, also called "early menopause" occurs when the ovaries slow or shut down before the age of 40. I have seen cases of this in women in their 20's! The diagnosis is made clinically (by your history and physical exam) and by an FSH level, which will be markedly elevated after menopause. However, hypothyrodism (too little thyroid hormone) can also cause this, so I would suggest that my patients with these symptoms have a TSH blood test performed.

The treatment, if you choose, is hormone replacement therapy. (Although I will not delve too much into the subject here, hormone replacement therapy has received bad press lately due to an unfortunate book written by a breast surgeon, Susan Love. Interestinly, I have never met a physician who agrees with her views).

Good luck with your evaluation.
