I have had a total of four vaginal cerclages. The first one I delivered at 26 weeks (a healthy 7 year old boy now), the second full-term, and the third and fourth miscarried at 20 weeks. I also lost two other babies to incompetent cervix, and two in early pregnancy for a total of 6 babies in Heaven. Are you a DES daughter? I am, and my mother felt very guilty about it. She's in later stages of Alzheimers and hasn't witnessed our last few losses. The abdominal cerclage was our only (or should I say last) hope, medically. The dr. told us about it after we experienced loss #6, and told us it entailed this surgery like a c-section and strict bedrest. I was scared to get pregnant again, but wanted another baby, so a year later we were back in his office. I had the abdominal cerclage at 14 weeks, and all went well. It was painful, as a c-section would be, and scary since we had the babe to think about. My dr. had done 15 of these in as many years, and all had been successful! I've never talked to a person who has had this exact same surgery, and only one who had a vaginal cerclage. BTW, the doctor who did my surgery did not put me on bedrest. He said either it will work or it won't. I'd still have to get up to use the restroom, etc. I don't overdo, and I'm pretty much recuperated from the surgery, but oh, do I have my ups and downs emotionally. We do have six living children who are a blessing to us. The oldest is 13 and the youngest is 6. They have been a big help during this time. They are very excited, as they always have been when another one was one the way. They take it hard when we lose one. I'm now almost 20 weeks along and just waiting. This pregnancy has gone so slow. I'd love to hear other people's experiences with this!
