HPV--method of transmission, incubation, testing

Can anyone tell me exactly how, mechanically, the HPV virus is transmitted during vaginal sex? Is it in the semen, or is the virus passed from the site of infection on the penis directly to vaginal or cervical mucosa? In other words, if a woman had HPV warts on her cervix, is that because her partner had HPV on the tip of his penis and it was rubbed against the cervix?

Also, what is the latency between infection and the development of actual warts?

And after warts are removed, how can infection with HPV be diagnosed? Is it detectable?
