massive denial of service attack: aka; Bruce says the site was out; Do you want to know the reason? From: Barbara (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 29 Sep 1997 20:02:20 -0500 (CDT)
Date: Mon, 29 Sep 1997 15:46:27 -0500 From: Bruce <anonymous@obgyn.net> To: anonymous@obgyn.net, anonymous@obgyn.net Subject: massive denial of service attack Message-ID: <1.5.4.32.19970929204627.008ee898@mail.zilker.net> OBGYN.net readers, Our Internet Service Provider (ISP) Illuminati and consequently also OBGYN.net was knocked off the net from 2:30PM yesterday until 8:30AM today CST. Service has been restored to normal and the forum list processor has caught up with the backlog. This primary target of this denial of service attack was NASA (US National Aeronautics and Space Agency). However, they faked the computer address for our ISP in this attack. NASA's computers responded by saturating all three T1 lines to our ISP with several thousand acknowledgement messages per second and overwhelming the routers capabilities to keep up with the massive network traffic. The FBI is investigating this incident since it was directed at a federal target. Steps have been taken at NASA, Sprint and MCI to block this from happenning again.
