Need help w/hyst decisionFor more information on symptoms and treatment of endometriosis visit www.EndometriosisZONE.org. From: Diane (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 24 Sep 1997 19:32:58 -0500 (CDT)
Dear Dr.'s of the list: I have posted several times before, but am not sure if you remember my situation. I am 38 and have endo for over 10 years. I have had 5 surgeries, taken Danazol 2x, and Lupron 2x w/addback and had a LUNA. My gyn did a lap/LUNA in March but was uanble to get to the endo as it is in my left pelvic sidewall and unable to be removed. I still didn't want a hyst, so my gyn sent me to see Dr. James Dorsey at GBMC. I had surgery by him in AUgust, but he also was not able to remove the endo due to it's delicate location and extent. I have since been in tremendous pain and saw my gyn last week and he recommended immediate surgery, a hyst. Of course, this is what I didn't want, so I still hesitated even though I was in so much pain. After careful thought all weekend, I finally gave in and decided to have the hyst. I need relief; the pain is overwhelming and has taken over my quality of life. I go tomorrow for a pre-op check up (heart, lungs, etc.). I'm sure I will also set up a date at that time. My dilemna is this: I strongly want to keep an ovary. My gyn strongly advises not to, as he feels the best way to get rid of all endo is to not have my ovaries, as if any endo were left, the remaining ovary would produce too much estrogen and perhaps trigger the cycling of any endo. He feels better about controlling the amount of estrogen himself synthetically. I do have to have estrogen, as due to taking Lupron, I have osteoporosis; therefore, estrogen is a must. I feel that if I have a good ovary, why take it out. There are benefits to keeping it. I realize it may cause me problems in the future, but it's a chance I may be willing to take. My Dr. is just afraid it will produce too much. Can you give me any insight as to the pros and cons of keeping an ovary in a situation like mine? Could the benefits outweigh the risks? I'm looking for info to help me decide what to do. I see my Dr. tomorrow and plan to discuss this with him further. He just feels that he would not be doing his job properly by advising me to keep one, which I can undestand, but I have no guarantees that I will indeed have problems by keeping it either. Thanks for your time in advance; it is much appreciated.
