Bleeding is common after a Pap smear, and is due to the "scraping" effect the wooden spatula has on the cervix, or the effect of the brush (or swab) within the cervical canal. It should be perfectly safe for you to have intercourse regardless of whether you are spotting. If the bleeding is more than mild spotting then you should certainly see your health care provider, although this is quite uncommon.
