Colposcopy Concerns/Aggravation

I am not even sure if this is the appropriate place to be asking this question; but I will forge ahead.

In 1995 I got back my first "abnomral" pap smear. I was 36. After several repeats and some meds...I "passed". Well, in 1996... same story...same scenario. This year...at 38...same old story... this time the GYN says I must have a colposcopy.

Of course... it is all very vague and no one seems to know much of anything at all that is concrete. It is all "do the test and we'll let you know what we find". As they are no longer doing the classification system that I can refer to... I feel like I am in the dark...which is more frightening than not knowing much of anything. Frankly...lots of articles telling you most cases turn out okay doesn't help since you know full well ALL of them don't!

Anyway...I have been searching the Internet learning all that I can about the procedure so that I know what to expect. I am getting quite concerned over hearing about the procedure being mildly to severely painful. How do I know which it will be for me? Don't tell me to take some Advil (what the GYN's office told me). Advil doesn't even help a darn headache much. Get real! Also...if you are a male doctor...don't tell me it won't hurt. How in the world would you know? Only someone who had this done could tell me that...and what I am reading and hearing isn't doing anything to build up my confidence. I actually feel like the GYN wants you to have as little information as possible.

Thanks: Kathleen L. Woltman
