menstruation after childbirth

I am 21 years old and gave birth to my first child in February. I nursed him for 2 months then switched to formula. My periods returned in May, but they have not been normal. They come every 28 days or so, but they last too long. The first 3 days are heavy, then 3 days of light, but then I have spotting for up to a week after that. What could be the cause of this? My doctor says it's just my body trying to get regulated again after having a baby, but wouldn't it have worked itself out by now? I am not on the pill and don't want to go on it if at all possible. What would get my cycle normal again? or is there possibly a more serious problem that is causing this to happen? Would appreciate any info you could give me.
