Irregular Bleeding/Periods (stress?)

I'm 26 years old and have had irregular periods for about 4 months. The first abnormal period came 2 weeks after my period, on the day my father-in-law passed away from cancer. I attributed it to stress, and in June my period returned to normal (I have 30 day cycles with menstruation lasting about 7-8). However, in July I had two periods, one 'normal' and one lasting about 3/4 days and mostly brownish. Since then I've had periods every 1 to 1.5 weeks, some are more 'normal', others this lighter, shorter period. My periods are usually preceeded by other symptoms- very tender breasts for instance. The shorter periods come unexpectedly with no symptoms.

I've always had normal pap smears (my latest exam was in January - this included a pelvic). I did have two miscarriages last year (one D&C) though and I have other conditions (MVP, IBS...). It has been a difficult year, my father also passed away a few months ago from cancer. I am _extremely_ fearful of cancer and was wondering if someone could offer possible explanations. I have a doctor's appointment but it isn't for a few weeks and I'm afraid my hyperactive mind will explode by then. Oh, and this might be completed unrelated but I've also had extremely painful backaches and stomach pain for the past few months.

I'm sorry for the length of this letter.
