Mariellen,

Boy, you've had to make a lot of adjustments in the past nine months! As wonderful as having a baby and being a mom are, life will never be the same again! :-) In most ways it's better, but it really takes some getting used to.

Thought not a physician, I am a mom of a now 22 month old little boy. And I, too, made the decision to quit my job and be a full-time mom. I breastfeed until 18 months. So...I can definitely relate with you! :-)

As for your period returning...it could be anytime. That is something that is very individual, every mom has a different story. If you are still nursing 4-6 times a day, I wouldn't plan on it happening right away (although it could). Some women see a return of their periods very soon after birth, others do not have a period until after they have stopped breastfeeding entirely. So...you never know!

It may very well be stress that is causing the feelings you are having...it could be something emotional in regards to your daughter nursing less and losing that "bond". It could be that adapting to life without an outside job is creating emotional stress. I know I went through various stages of acceptance of quitting my job...it does get easier over time. If you are worried about finances, especially without your income now...that can definitely impact your moods. The lost sleep is always an issue but believe it or not, you will be sleeping through the night again...soon! It's good that you are exercising and trying to combat the mental side of it that way, but if the depression is serious enough that it affects the way you interact with your family or it worries you, make an appointment with your physician to discuss it. It might help to talk about it and maybe he/she will be able find a reason (physical or otherwise) and help you to deal with it effectively. That's what your doctor is there for!

I wish you luck in making the transition...being home with these little ones is such an incredible opportunity...enjoy it all you can! And if you'd like to talk more, please feel free to e-mail me!
