Re: Another MiscarriageFrom: Kelly (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 1 Aug 1997 19:49:34 -0500 (CDT)
Jamie Please accept my condolences on your miscarriage -- I've also had 2 miscarriages (8 and 5.5 weeks), so I know the pain, sorow, bewilderment, frustration and anger you may be feeling now. Miscarriages are, unfortunately, very common. About 20% of pregnancies that are recognized end in miscarriage. Many others occur before you even know you are pregnant. Your 2 miscarriages may be related to the same problem (infection, autoimmune disease, etc) or may be completely random events. Please talk to your doctor about testing that is available to investigate why this may be happening to you (testing, however, may not be able to pinpoint a cause; some things we just never *know*) At 6 weeks a D&C may not be necessary. The body can often pass the pregnacy tissue on its own, without "hemorrhage". I had a D&C with my first miscarriage and elected to let my body handle things wiht the second at 5.5 weeks. I cramped like hell for a few hours, bled heavily for about an hour, and then it was over (except for the emotional turmoil, which continues). Everyone is different, and every miscarriage is different. What is the right way to go for one person not be the right way for another. Please talk to your doctor and discuss your options, and most importantly, let your doctor know your wishes. You and your husband will be in my thoughts. Take good care,
-- Kelly Shanahan, MD, FACOG S. Lake Tahoe, CA
