Hi Anne, I just had this done 6/30/97 & I can give you first hand advise, but I'm no Dr.

In answer to your questions:

1. How long should it take?>> The actual procedure takes approx. 10 to 15 minutes. (But it takes longer getting you ready & getting the radiologist there to check things out.)

2. Will it hurt? I am the BIGGEST wimp...>> Mine was very painful and my Dr. didn't prepare me for that & I was just told, "Take an Ibuprofen 600 before coming in to help with the cramps afterward." But the actual cervical clamp & catheter & dye injection were not pleasant. It may vary with each person, but I would suggest you have your DH or a friend go with you to hold your hand & talk you through it. My DH was there & I never would have made it without him... And yes, It was worth the pain to find out my tubes are NOT blocked :) !!!!

3. Will I be able to go by myself, ie drive, etc?>> I wouldn't suggest it, but I think you would be fine to drive yourself if you have no other option.

4. Will there be any strange discharge after or any other side effects of the dye?>> Take a pad, there will be some slight bleeding. As for side effects from the dye.. "non that I'm aware of" , but you may want to ask your Dr.

5. If there is no obstruction and we move on from here, how soon after the test will I get my period---right on schedule? >>Mine came right on schedule, but you may want to direct this to your Dr. as well...

6. Finally what EXACTLY do they do, procedure wise? >>From what I understand, they put a clamp on the cervix, insert a catheter that has a balloon at the end, then the inject dye through while filming & you should be able to watch it on a monitor. You actually know the results right then.

Well, I hope I could help. I'm not a Dr., just an unfortunate victim of the procedure. I wish you all the best & good luck with this test.

Best wishes to all.
