bacterial vaginosis prevention

I'm experiencing my second attack of this infection in less than two months. The first infection was finally healed using flagyl and cleocin (after my doctor prescribed numerous creams and diflucan to combat the yeast infection I never had). I have since changed doctors, and am very pleased so far. My question, however, is how can this infection be prevented? What causes it? I realize it has to do with gardnerella vaginalis, but what does that mean to me? Could my oral contraceptives make me more suseptible? Is it a hygiene problem? Please help me understand. I really don't want to have to fight this problem every two months. Thanks for your help!
