Abnormal Bleeding

This is the first time I have seen this site and was glad to see that there hada already been some questions on this subject, but I did not see too much in the way of explanations. I am 45, and am on Lo-Ovral to control and regulate my periods which were getting heavy several years ago. For the last year I have had a number of very heavy periods and they seemed to be getting worse, so my doctor did a hysteroscopy (?), a D & C with a scope, there were no fibroids in the uterus itself. Since then, about 2 months now, I have been bleeding even more, my 2 periods were very heavy, with lots of clots and going thru super tampons and a pad sometimes in an hour or less for several hours in a row, for the whole seven days that I was off the pill. My period only stops when I restart the pill, and then it has been spotting most days and usually has one time a day where I have a "blow-out", go thru a tampon and pad immediately, then it slows back down. My doctor does not know what is causing it and seems to think I may need to consider a hysterectomy, or the burning off of the uterus lining. I have not had any blood tests, I think because the pill is supposed to be controlling the hormone level. Any comments or advice on this would be appreciated. Thank you.
