importance of accuracy in calculating LMP and conception? From: Andrea (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 12 Jul 1997 07:02:41 -0500 (CDT)
Exactly how important is it to know the date of LMP and/or conception, and are there reliable ways to figure it out, via ultrasound, for example? I am thinking that some prenatal test results (like AFP) could be labeled "abnormal" if the dates are simply miscalculated. I am 35, pregnant with 2nd (3 years ago had an uneventful, 42-week pregnancy and Pitocin-induced labor that went fine, now I have a healthy kid). I have zero recollection of when was LMP, but I think I know when ovulation occurred, based on cervical mucus. About 9-11 days later, there was slight spotting, which I took (at the time) to be the beginning of my period, but since it turned out to be only slight, now I am wondering if that was actually embryo implantation. So far, so good. However, I do have a rough idea of when were the periods before the LMP, and if I use the above information to back-calculate when LMP was (eg, two weeks prior to conception), it seems like an awfully long (for me) menstrual cycle -- like, nearly 6 weeks, when my cycles are usually 28 days. Would an ultrasound give me an accurate date? Even if I am eating 100 grams of protein/day, which I understand may help a baby develop faster?
