Ovarian CancerFrom: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 2 Jul 1997 20:44:53 -0500 (CDT)
Just want to say thank you to Dr. Klein for taking the time to answer and for all the very helpful information. In the back of my mind I knew the link was there to colon cancer, but never thought to have my stool tested for blood. I have the mamogram and transvaginal ultrasonogram tests coming up so I think I will include the stool testing at that time or get one of the "at home" kits. Although I have not heard of any other instances of ovarian cancer in my family, I am going to check into family records to investigate further. If there is any other evidence of it in the family I may then consider checking into a cancer research center close to me to see if they have an experimental protocol for ovarian cancer screening. My sister received her treatment in a Clinical Trial at the National Institute of Health and they do the ovarian cancer screening only if there are two or more instances in the family. It's like playing hit and miss trying to figure out where this thing is going to show itself. I try not to dwell on it but when the time comes for these tests it's hard not to worry. I can only hope if it hits, I can catch it in Stage I or II wherever it is... only ovarian is sooooo sneaky...usually showing it's ugly face when it's too late. We can only hope someone somewhere is going to find the right combination for ovarian cancer screening that will catch it in the beginning stages. I worry sometimes though that the research for ovarian cancer takes a back burner to breast cancer research. I think they are equally important, but, in my opinion, you hear much more about Foundations for researching breast cancer, but none for ovarian cancer. Well, again, thank you. You have been very helpful. Well, thank you again!!
