Progestins are commonly used to treat DUB(dysfunctional uterine bleeding). This is abnormal bleeding secondary to anovulation or a hormonal imbalance. The medication does not usually stop bleeding, although it may seem to decrease. It is used to "mature" the endometrium so it will slough off normally. If there is some other problem causing the abnormal bleeding it usually does not help. If the problem persists you should discuss other options such as hysteroscopy or D&C. If you also have endometriosis that is causing other symptoms hysterectomy is also another option you should consider.
