Re: epidural for vaginal childbirthFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netMon, 30 Jun 1997 15:08:56 -0400 (EDT)
Kelly, This is strictly non-medical info, but based on what I heard in my childbirth classes and what I've read (I'm sure the doctors on the forum will be able to confirm or better explain!). I was told that my local hospital and anesthesiologists will not start an epidural until you are at least 4 cm dilated...otherwise, the epidural can tend to slow down labor and increase your risk for induction as well. They do make an exception (at this hospital anyway) for those who had their labor induced to start with...they are willing to start an epidural about the same time as starting the Pitocin drip because contractions tend to be more painful, stronger, and closer together. In my case, it was a scheduled C-section, which became unscheduled when my water broke 2 weeks earlier, so I never experienced it firsthand. Darcy Johnson Co-Moderator, Women's Health Forum
