epidural for vaginal childbirthFrom: K.Tice (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 30 Jun 1997 01:21:52 -0500 (CDT)
I am interested to know at what stage of labor it is best to administer an epidural anaesthesia? My anaesthetist suggested the best time is once labor is established, however my midwives advice is to have it administered as contractions start becoming uncomfortable (in a light dose). My anaesthetists concern is that if I have it too late I may be in alot of pain before he can get there and set it up. My midwife on the other hand feels if I have the epidural put in too early i may relax too much and not participate in the labor, which may put me at a hiher risks of a surgical delivery (i.e. forceps, episiotomy, c-section). I tend to agree with my midwife, but would like some more sound advice on the subject. Kelly
